Cher Guillaume

When man wanted to make a machine that would walk he created the wheel, which does not resemble a leg.

As I sit here reading flyers for teachers appreciation day at a supplies store I am reminded that last year, when we did computer work, students liked to have earphones or ear buds on. Area 34 only has 2 pairs for students to borrow.
Boubalou, this year you need a saucer with your tea cup (treats you see).

Good news

For families who prefer reading in their mother tongue, the blog now has a 'translate' feature. At the very bottom of the darker blue area, underneath the links, there is a 'translate' button from which you can choose many languages. 'Google translate' is usually pretty good. I hope you enjoy our blog. Goodness only knows what the 'translate' will look like when the kids are writing the blog; they seem to write as if everyone can read their thoughts to understand what is not there!! Something to work, on of course!

Back soon!

Welcome to new students and welcome back to students returning to Area 34.
I'm thinking about you more and more often now that school is close to starting.

The 2012-2013 classroom schedule will look something like this:
Day 1        Day 2          Day 3         Day 4         Day 5
Music        Music           Gym           Gym          Music
Gym         Running                                         Running

*  Running is the DPA (Daily Physical Activity) aspect of our curriculum. DPA is mandatory for every student in Ontario. Students greatly benefit from being physically active every single day. I witnessed it all of last year; it makes a huge difference in focus. We will run at 9:40 every Day 2 and Day 5 until recess and parents are welcome to join us.
We run through rain, snow, hale, high wind, snow storms. We do not run through thunder and lightning because they're dangerous.
There's a good chance you'll get good and wet running in wet weather so you'll be well prepared if you keep a change of clothes (including socks!) at school.
If you want to run in designated running clothes, be sure to bring designated school clothes with you to change after running. That's what I like to do.
Blocks of times for other subjects will be incorporated into the chart closer to September.

We do a lot of computer work so your own USB key would come in handy if you have one. On a lanyard, maybe...

By November you will know your times tables from 0 x 0 to 12 x 12 and most of you will already write quite well in cursive. The word cursive comes from the Latin word 'currere' which means 'run'. Writing in cursive is faster than printing and shows your individuality; everybody has a unique way to write. That is why it is so difficult to copy someone else's signature.

The first day of classes is Tuesday September 4, Day 1. We run the second day of classes, Wednesday the 5th, Day 2. You will need running shoes with good support for your feet.

Families, we learn the times tables by heart early in the year because they are referred to many times as we encounter different math problems. In area 34 memorizing the tables is a must have. Once they are learned, the answers come to your child's mind quickly and accurately. Then math becomes so much more fun to do.
Here is an article that I really liked and I will use some of the strategies presented in it in the classroom.

Grade 4 students, prepare yourselves for different challenges. You start English instruction, you can try out for many sport teams, and more. In addition to reviewing your times tables you will spend the start of the year learning the correct spelling of many words both in French and in English. This will help you increase your vocabulary and enhance your writing.

As you know, if you work well and with focus in class, there is usually no homework. If you do not focus, you need to finish your work after school.

Our tea time will be on Day 1 after p.m. recess. Please bring a tea cup and a saucer. We need the saucer to hold treats. I will have cookies for you and any family wanting to contribute to our treats is welcome. We will start tea on week 2 of classes.

Kids, please don't come for computers the first day back, it will be too busy and besides I will be outside waiting for you. Good news, I do not have entry duties in the morning this year (so it will be easier to come in early and stay).

Enjoy the rest of the summer break.
I am really looking forward to seeing all of you who are coming back to Area 34 and meeting all of you who are new to the Area 34 experience!

For running, a change of clothing

For running the students will need to keep a change of clothing at school, especially socks. The clothes are kept in our cloakroom on a hook. Each student has 2 hooks one above the other.
Some students like to change after a run. This is a different change of clothes, one that travels to and from school on running days.
